Origins

The early history of Toto, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the beginning, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

Discography

You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a relatively straightforward rock group. The group began as a quartet and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a variety of musical backgrounds, their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of issues. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release the top single or they would rescind the album. Toto was able to achieve this feat with the help of the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their prior experience since the members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into your. But the album also contains some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually works amazingly well.

After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet structure, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band not to feature a single song with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
